The Truth About Feng Shui Décor
The traditional practice of Feng Shui has absolutely nothing to do with trinkets, gadgets,or odd-looking Chinese figurines and décor. In fact, the power of the authentic practice lies in the SUBTLETY of the design.
I continuously address this statement because our understanding of Feng Shui has, unfortunately, been diluted to the easy, do-it-yourself kind of westernized quick fixes, which has completely watered down this precious Feng Shui wisdom.
If you think about big corporations like Cathay Pacific, Virgin Airways, The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, Hotel Lisboa in Macau, and Hong Kong Disneyland (all of which have integrated the principles of Classical Feng Shui), do you see anything odd about their office space and office building designs?
Remember, Classical Feng Shui boils down to the workings of two important systems: Forms (observing the landscape of the environment) and Compass (calculating the time factor with a Feng Shui calendar and taking directional energies with a Feng Shui compass).
When you translate this to the inner space of your home, you will realize that Classical Feng Shui has absolutely nothing to do with having a red door, a Dragon picture, money frog figurines, crystals, de-cluttering, or keeping the toilet seat cover down, etc. This type of thinking is not “true” Feng Shui. Instead, it is a diluted style adopted in the West to make Feng Shui “easy” and/or to sell commercialized products.
Traditional Feng Shui objects are actually quite discreet and can often be incorporated into a home or business without giving away any inkling that Feng Shui has been used.
Joey Yap once said in his lecture, “Incorporating Feng Shui doesn’t mean you have to turn your house into a Chinese restaurant!” And that is the truth.
And so, I share with you what my greatest teacher Grand Master Raymond Lo has continuously and consistently articulated to his students about Feng Shui:
- A proper Feng Shui assessment must include the examination of BOTH the environment and the abstract. They are like software and hardware — one cannot be done without the other. All other method is false and inauthentic.
- The design of a home must be comfortable. Any obvious signs of strange design and decor for the sake of Feng Shui is also not authentic.
